Growth and expansion: prospecting a company that is scaling up
Some companies do not hire one role, they open ten. Others acquire a competitor or merge. Either way, everything that comes with the change of scale becomes urgent.

In short
A growing company becomes a prospect when it opens five or more roles at once or announces a merger or acquisition: headcount, tools, offices and vendors all have to keep up. The Sales Engine detects these hiring pushes and deals in your market, finds the relevant decision-makers at the company and writes a first message on what the change of scale requires.
Two signals, one moment
The hiring push: a company opens five or more roles at once. Headcount has just been approved, and with it everything that follows: recruiting, onboarding, training, equipment, offices, tooling. The need usually lasts one to three months.
The merger or acquisition: a company in your market buys another or merges. The acquirer has an integration budget; the acquired company often sees every vendor reviewed. The window is longer, three to nine months, because integration takes time.
Reading the signal and picking an angle
| What you see | What it often implies | Recommended angle | When to write |
|---|---|---|---|
| Five or more roles opened at once | Headcount growth approved | Onboarding, training and equipping fast | Within the first month |
| A hiring wave in one department | A team changing size | What no longer works at that size: process, tools, management | Within the first month |
| Acquisition announced, acquirer side | Integration budget, harmonisation | Integrating teams, tools or processes | Months 1 to 3 |
| Acquisition announced, acquired side | Review of every vendor | What will be rationalised and how to prepare | Months 2 to 6 |
| Merger of two players | Duplicate tools and suppliers | Choosing between two systems or two vendors | Months 2 to 9 |
How The Sales Engine handles these signals
Hiring push
A minimum number of open roles (five by default, which is what separates a push from a one-off hire), a ceiling to leave out very large groups that hire constantly, and optional job titles. Window: postings from the last thirty days.
Merger or acquisition
Deal type (merger, acquisition), minimum amount, announcement period and headquarters location.
The company joins your Accounts
With one of the open roles, or the deal announcement, as dated evidence.
Decision-makers are found
At the detected company, based on your persona: HR, finance, operations, procurement or leadership, depending on what you sell. Each contact is verified and scored.
Approval and message
You approve; the opener starts from the observed growth and what it changes for the person.
Mistakes to avoid
- Counting a single posting as growth: that is a different, narrower signal, covered in hiring.
- Targeting very large groups: they hire all the time, so the signal says nothing there. Cap the number of roles.
- Writing to an acquired company as if nothing changed: its buying decisions may now sit with the acquirer. Find out who decides.
- Talking about the deal rather than its consequences: your prospect knows their company’s news; they want a view on what it implies.
Frequently asked questions
How many open roles count as a hiring push?
The default threshold is five roles opened at once. You can raise it, and set a ceiling to leave out companies that hire continuously.
Which kinds of M&A are tracked?
Announced mergers and acquisitions, filterable by minimum amount, announcement period and headquarters location.
Should I prospect the acquirer or the acquired company?
Both may have a need. The acquirer has an integration budget; the acquired company often has its vendors reviewed. The right side depends on your offer.
How long does a growth phase stay a good signal?
Usually one to three months for a hiring push, three to nine months for a merger or acquisition, the time integration takes.
Does this signal suit HR and workplace offers?
Those are the most direct cases: recruiting, training, onboarding, equipment and offices follow headcount growth. Tooling and consulting offers fit as well.
