Buying signal
New decision-maker: how to approach them in their first months
When someone matching your persona starts a new role, they arrive with a mandate, few ties to the incumbent vendors and a wish to make their mark. It is one of the most reliable B2B signals, provided you write with some tact.

In short
A new decision-maker is someone matching your persona who has just started a role at a company in your market. Their first months are often spent re-evaluating vendors and tools. The Sales Engine spots these role changes over the last six or twelve months, checks the title against your target, then writes a first message built on that change.
Why a new role is a buying moment
A leader who arrives inherits more than a team: they inherit choices made by someone else. They owe nothing to the incumbent vendor, they need to show results quickly, and for a while questioning the status quo is expected rather than suspicious.
They also listen more. They are looking for reference points on their market, their peers and what works elsewhere. A message that helps them sort things out is welcome. A message that congratulates them and jumps to a demo is not.
Reading the signal and picking an angle
| What you see | What it often implies | Recommended angle | When to write |
|---|---|---|---|
| A new head of sales | Review of the pipeline, tools and prospecting methods | The first clean-up they make in the pipeline | Months 1 to 3 |
| A new CFO | Review of costs, reporting tools and vendors | A cost line or tool they are discovering | Months 2 to 4 |
| A new CIO or CTO | Mapping the systems, projects on hold | A workstream they inherit and must decide on | Months 1 to 6 |
| Internal promotion to a decision role | Continuity, but a new scope and budget | What changes with the wider remit | First weeks |
| Arrival from a competitor or one of your customers | They already know your category | What they used before, as a benchmark | As soon as detected |
How The Sales Engine handles this signal
You describe who you are after
Personas and, if needed, free-text titles. Without one or the other the signal cannot be activated: the person is the signal.
You pick the window
Role changes over the last six or twelve months, within the industries, sizes and regions of your target.
The title is checked
The new role is compared with your target titles. An off-persona contact is set aside: the company stays in your Accounts, no prospect is created and nothing is billed.
The profile is verified and scored
The full profile is read and scored for relevance to what you sell. Below the threshold, the contact is set aside at no cost.
You approve, the sequence starts
The prospect arrives with the new role, the previous one and the evidence. Once you approve, the opener is written on that change and the email and LinkedIn sequence begins.
Mistakes to avoid
- Writing on announcement day with "congrats" followed by a pitch: that is the message everyone sends.
- Assuming a project: the new leader may well keep what is in place. Offer a hypothesis, not a certainty.
- Targeting a title that is too broad: a "director" with no function brings back profiles that do not buy your offer.
- Forgetting the company: the right person at an off-target company is still a poor prospect. The check scores both.
Frequently asked questions
How long after they start should I contact a new decision-maker?
The useful window usually covers their first six months. The first weeks are spent settling in; many vendor decisions come after. Writing with the right angle beats writing on day one.
Why is the detection window six or twelve months?
Those are the two windows on offer. Six months targets recent arrivals; twelve months widens volume in a narrow market. There is no shorter window.
Is a new decision-maker always a buyer?
No. It is someone whose role matches your persona, at a company in your target. The check sets aside titles and companies that do not fit, but your approval makes the call.
What if the person has already been contacted?
A contact already reached from your workspace is not created again. The signal is logged on the account without duplicating the prospect.
Should the message mention the new role?
Usually it is the right starting point, as long as it leads to a hypothesis that is useful to them. The opener is written on the signal while it is recent; you review it before it is sent.
